matty bovan: hand made to consume less

photograph: courtesy coach, flagship boutique in paris Collaborating with Coach, Matty B0van has banished their stodgy affectation, adding a hand wrought effect with pearls, glitter and paint. This alliance has exposed Bovan to a much wider audience and as he states 'given my collection an invaluable layer..." Bovan's a/w 2019/2020 collection again includes the knitwear Bovan has uniquely imprinted with new silhouette's and continuing the hand made aesthetic with unfinished edges and elements. Learning to knit as a child, Bovan's work in brutal and expressionistic. It's revealing of his impact that DIY Wool and the Gang sponsored his first presentation, and produced the pattern and wools for The Highway Mask designed by Bovan. When he sells to retailers, every item is numbered and slightly different.

Mass consumption can not go on forever." Often one of the problems designers encounter working with recyclables is the need for material uniformity, so a piece may be replicated. Matty Bovan is an intrepid soul who realises hand craft is one solution to this issue, in that by definition, hand crafting is not mass production. Fashion has needed such leaders for decades, and at some point humans must commit to saving our planet or eating the literally poisoned fruits of capitalism.
